Keyword Analysis is the basic step of any SEO Plan. Before going into more detail about how to perform keyword research and analysis for any website, you need to understand why keywords are so important for you.

Because Keywords bring traffic!

Yes, Weather its a shot term or long tail keywords, visitors get to know about your website through search engine. They visit your website based on your keywords performance over search engine which generally termed as Organic Traffic. Not only to focus on Organic traffic but to get quick traffic from Paid Campaign, you always need to perform proper keywords research.

In this blog, I am going to show you all possible tools and techniques to do comprehensive keyword analysis for any website.

Step 1: Identify Potential Keywords

This is very first step of keywords research where no tools are required. If you are the owner of the website, then you must know what type of visitors exactly you want on your website but if you are SEO guy handling the project, then you must understand the subject. Ask for recommended keywords from client and make a list of keywords based on the suggestion and knowledge you have acquired for the assignment. You don’t have to be super smart but general intelligence and little combination with the keywords will give you enough list to begin with.

Once you have some set of keywords, you need to look for all potential keywords with the help of Advanced Keywords Analysis Tool. There are plenty of tools available which are free and paid as well. You have got lots of tools to do keyword analysis but What i prefer at the start is tools from Google. Type your selection on Google search box (Don’t just copy-past) and you will get lots of relevant suggestion to your search term. Besides, suggestion on the top of the bar, you will see few more hyperlinked suggestions at the bottom of the result. Collect the data as much as possible but you should not deviate with your website topic. Now you have plenty of keywords mixed with shot tail and long tails, its time to dig dipper.

Go to Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool and put the keywords in search box, filter out location and search to get more related keywords. Keyword Planner Tool will show you average monthly volume and competition individually and also in set of categories. Shortlist “Low” & “Medium” competition keywords.

You will see one more option for each keywords that will redirect you to Google Trends behavior. You can observe the keywords performance trend on Google over the period. Google trend also gives you quick overview of relevant popular keywords side by side.

Note: Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool is basically designed for PPC Campaign. The competition level for each keyword you will see is for biding. It has nothing to do with Organic competition yet you can consider it and make your selection.

Once you have got most filtered list of keywords, it is time to find out competition level for organic visitors and Google is the best tool to find out. When you search any keyword, you would see a number like –

About 6,10,00,000 results (0.33 seconds)

which actually show how many website contains this term organized or unorganized way. The lesser is the number, better for you because with the huge competition level, there is high chance of difficultly and not ranking well on search engine. So Choose your keyword wisely.

Most of the people are aware of these tools and commonly use to perform keyword research but there are two more free tools from Google that often we forget or take them for granted – Google Analytic & Google Webmaster. 

If you have started a new website then this technique is not applicable initially but you can surely check it back once your website get 1-2 month old. Now those who has enough Analytic data can take help of Google Analytic organic search and Webmaster Search data. 

When you login to your Google Analytics account, you can get Organic data from Acquisition segment. Export the result with other matrix like – Session, bounce rate, targeted pages etc and evaluate your potential keywords.

Similarly in Webmaster Tool, you will see Search Impression, Clicks, CTR  and Position on Search Engine. You can also select a data range to see keyword behaviors within that period.

Tools are there to show you analytic data but it depends how you use it to make most of it. So do subject research primarily before jump into keyword analysis.
